History

I began ham radio by tinkering with my great uncle's 1930 era short wave radios and at Reseda High School (San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California 91335) I joined the newly formed radio club that held a Class B license with the call sign of K6QNP.

The Station was in the 'Electric Shop' (Industrial Arts Building) and included a Viking Ranger, a Hammerlund HQ-170, and a rooftop beam with rotor. I had a National HRO-170 at home and loved buying and modifying war surplus radios like the ARC-5s.

The 'Electric Shop' teacher and Radio Club sponsor was Mr. Don Brockway, W6PL. I consider myself fortunate to have been in the Radio Club from 1960-1962 and learned from a true pioneer.

However, shortly after graduation I stopped my ham radio activity, entered the USMC and eventually continued with electronics with a career in the semiconductor industry. In 2004 I invented electronic fireflies Patent 7,212,932 that are used in theme parks, zoos, and nature centers around the world, as well as for home backyards. In 2013 I sold the business Firefly Magic and retired.

I acquired my Amateur Extra license AF7GI in 2014 and in May of 2016 obtained the vanity call K6SJT, my initials.
